Valerie Tee Lee (b. 1995, KR/BE) is a Brussels-based artist working across performance, text, and communal practices. Rooted in feminist pedagogy and shaped by her lived experience as an immigrant woman, Lee explores embodied knowledge, silenced histories, and the porous boundaries between nature and artifice.
Her works interweave personal and diasporic memory with human and non-human resonance, often through tactile materials such as wax, agar, silk, and bioplastics. In her duo exhibition Glossary for the Wild Tongues (2023, Atletika Gallery), she published a book of the same title, where the fictional “Medusa Syndrome,” coined by Lee and inspired by her grandmother’s stories of colonial displacement, evokes the sensation of an invisible tongue causing physical and emotional distress, metaphorically expressing diasporic women’s struggle to voice silenced histories. Through publication and performance, Lee summons spectral presences inhabiting these in-between spaces.
Her solo exhibition Domesticated 9 Tails and Tales (2024, Space Übermensch) examined how survival, care, and self-domestication overlap. Through materials like agar and nets, she traced transnational memory and envisioned identities that move fluidly across bodies, species, and borders.
Across her work, Lee invites us to listen for voices that seep, spill, and rewrite themselves—traversing boundaries while weaving stories through material form.
She has participated in residencies at Rupert (LT), Podium (NO), Sim (IS), M4 gastatelier (NL), Space Übermensch (KR), and wpZimmer (BE). Lee holds a BFA from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and is currently active across Belgium and South Korea.
